Mabel Ragan turns 111

Mabel Ragan of Albion will turn 111 on Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2012.

Mabel resides at Good Samaritan Society Albion, Wolf Memorial Home, and she is currently Nebraska’s oldest resident.

She was born Feb. 1, 1901 on a farm near Newman Grove.

Home, Farm & Garden Show preparations underway

Preparations are continuing for the second Home, Farm & Garden Show to be held Saturday, March 24, starting at 8:30 a.m. at the Boone County Fairgrounds.

About 50 vendors had signed up for the show by Jan. 31, according to Theresa Scheffler, chairperson.

Boone County Agricultural Society is the show sponsor.

The day will include a variety of free workshops and demonstrations by vendors.

Chamber, AEDC banquet is Sunday

Albion Chamber of Commerce and Albion Economic Development Corp. will hold their joint annual banquet on Sunday, Jan. 29, at the Albion Country Club.

The social hour will begin at 5 p.m., followed by the dinner at 6 p.m. Both organizations will review activities and achievements of the past year, as well as goals for the coming year.

Guest speakers will be State Sen. Kate Sullivan, and Ann Gentle of Omaha, who will talk about communication and customer service. Members of the Boone Central speech team will provide entertainment.

Banquet tickets are available from Jill Anding, executive director of both organizations.

Meeting set Friday on county building remodel

Boone County Development Agency will hold a public meeting this Friday, Jan. 13, to discuss the renovation plan and budget for remodeling the former SourceGas building on Fourth Street in Albion.

The meeting will be held at 7:30 a.m. in the Boone County Courtroom.

After remodeling, BCDA would move its offices from the courthouse into the building. Preliminary cost estimate for the project is $44,870.

Foundation event is Sunday, Jan. 8

Boone County Area Foundation Fund annual celebration banquet this Sunday, Jan. 8, starting at 11:45 a.m. at the Albion Country Club.

Guest speaker for the celebration will be Richard Walter of Shickley, NE, who was named the 2011 outstanding volunteer by the Nebraska Community Foundation.

Many of the more than $14,500 in grants awarded last fall to area organizations will be presented during the banquet.

Choral Clinic set at Boone Central

Boone Central High School will host its 67th annual Choral Clinic on Monday, Jan. 16, with students from 15 area schools participating.

Guest clinician this year is Dr. Peter Eklund, director of Choral Activities at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

After a full day of rehearsal, a public concert will be presented at 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 16 at the Boone Central Gym.

‘Mr. Naz’ entertains at Petersburg

“Mr. Naz” was the featured entertainer at the annual Petersburg Community Club Christmas Dinner on Monday night, Dec. 19, at Petersburg’s Werner Hall.

His act featured magic, comedy and audience participation. A large crowd attended the event again this year.

Hay rack rides set for Thursday

Hay rack rides will be the featured attraction this Thursday night, Dec. 15, in downtown Albion.

If weather and street conditions permit, the hay rack rides will be available from 6 to 8 p.m. at the downtown mini-park. Free cookies and cider will also be available there.

The third weekly drawing for Albion gift certificates will also be held at the mini-park at 6 p.m.
