Veterans Day program set Friday at school

Guest speaker will be John Zourska, a Korean War veteran and new member of Albion American Legion Post 162 who recently moved to Albion. His topic will be the Statue of Liberty.
All area veterans will be honored during the program.
Groundbreaking Thursday for new GSS-Albion wing

A public groundbreaking ceremony will be held this Thursday, Nov. 3, at 3 p.m. for the new 20-bed wing at Good Samaritan Society - Albion Wolf Memorial Home.
Construction began last week with pouring of concrete for the new facility on the southeast side of Wolf Memorial.
Weather permitting, the ceremony will be held outdoors at the construction site. A donor celebration will follow from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at Samaritan Estates, across Sixth Street from the nursing home.
The project was made possible through a $2.25 million capital campaign that was completed late in 2010.
Downtown Albion Halloween event set

Albion businesses will host the annual downtown trick-or-treating and the Halloween Costume Parade for children on Monday, Oct. 31, starting at 4 p.m.
Children are also invited to bring their decorated pumpkins downtown for display.
The pumpkins can be dropped off Wednesday, Oct. 26 from 4 to 5:30 p.m., and should be picked up on Tuesday, Nov. 1.
Drop-off locations for decorated pumpkins are:
- Ages up to four years old: Wells Drug & Hallmark
- Ages five to seven: Fusion Center on Main Street
- Ages eight to 10: Leifeld’s Furniture and Flooring
- Ages 11 and older: The Boot Rack.
Good Samaritan Society will also host trick-or-treating after the downtown event.
‘Pink out’ focuses on breast cancer awareness

The event grew much larger than initially anticipated.
Amanda Lipker designed a BCHS Pink Out 2011 shirt, and approximately 600 orders were placed.
Many football players and coaches wore pink accessories, such as pink ribbon stickers for football players’ helmets, arm bands, shoelaces, socks, shirts, hats and beanies that were readily seen during the game.
Funds were raised with a cake raffle, caramel apple and t-shirt sales to support LeaAnn Wells, who is currently battling breast cancer.

Pumpkins will be flying Oct. 30 at Petersburg

Trebuchet launchers like this one have competed in Punkin Chunkin’.
The eighth annual competition will be held Sunday, Oct. 30, starting at 1 p.m. just east of Petersburg.
Machines can shoot, launch, throw or fling a 6-12 lb. pumpkin. Community volunteers or club members drive four wheelers through the corn or soybean fields and measure distance shot by a Global Positioning System (GPS). Longest distance shot in 2010 was 3,329 feet from an air gun.
There are four divisions: air gun, mechanical, trebuchet and catapult. A $500 award is given for the longest distance. Petersburg State bank puts up $500 for a chance to win during the accuracy contest. There is no entry fee, and safety rules apply. There?is a high school division where a trophy?is awarded. No explosives are allowed.

Spirit Week leading up to Color Day at Boone Central

Boone Central High School students are involved in Spirit Week this week, which leads up to the annual Color Day coronation and dance this Saturday, Oct. 8.
Students are participating in decorating contests and dress-up days throughout the week. A pep rally is planned Friday, Oct. 7.
Color Day ceremonies on Saturday will include the coronation at 7 p.m., followed by a dance.

Wine tasting, dinner, auction part of Sunday golf event

Wine tasting, a silent auction, steak dinner and drawing for a “mystery gift” will be part of the fun during the 2011 Albion Chamber of Commerce Golf Challenge this Sunday, Sept. 25, at the Albion Country Club.
Admission tickets for the wine tasting, silent auction and dinner are available this week from Jill Anding at the Albion Chamber of Commerce office, and from members of the Golf Challenge Committee.
The day begins with an 18-hole four-person golf scramble starting at 10 a.m.
