Slow Start Again Dooms Cards At State
March 9, 2010

Ever have that feeling you’ve seen this before? The Boone Central girls basketball team certainly had that oh-so-familair sensation Thursday in the opening round of the 2010 Nebraska Girls State Basketball Tournament.
One year after trailing state tourney foe Bennington 40-18 at halftime of a 59-51 loss, the Lady Cardinals fell in a 15-1 first-quarter hole and were forced to rally from a 26-11 halftime deficit against Lutheran High NE at Lincoln’s Pershing Auditorium.
Despite a strong final 12 minutes by the Cardinals, Lutheran NE scored a 45-34 victory, ending Boone Central’s season in the first round of the C1 state tourney for the second straight year. Read more

Unbelievable.
Or not.
One of the great things about athletics is that we never know what might happen. Our sports competitions keep us guessing. It’s part of what draws us, keeps us on the edge of our seats.
But, c’mon, who could have imagined that Boone Central’s 2010 first-round game in the girls state basketball tournament would be nearly a carbon copy of the Cardinals’ 2009 state tourney contest? What were the odds?
It was almost as if ‘09 was an audition and, having garnered the role, the Cards played it to perfection in 2010. We all know, however, Boone Central coaches and players certainly wanted no part in mirroring last year’s disappointment.
Crazy. That’s athletics. Read more
Defense Keys Holy Family Championship

We Are The Champions!
You’ve heard that mantra many times in many sports.
Now, the Lindsay Holy Family Lady Bulldogs are further proof off its validity.
Holy Family, seeded 6th in the Class D2 field of the Nebraska Girls State Basketball Tournament, used stifling defense to reel off three victories in Lincoln March 4-6, claiming the 2010 D2 championship with a 40-37 victory over previously unbeaten Wynot Saturday at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.
Lindsay Holy Family (22-2) also defeated #3 seed Hay Springs and #7 Lawrence-Nelson, holding its three tournament opponents to an average of just 32.6 points per game. Read more

Play it again - say it again - the Boone Central Lady Cardinals are headed back to the state tournament!
Boone Central overcame a sluggish opening with a furious finish Friday, defeating Grand Island Central Catholic 56-43 for the C1-4 District championship before a packed house at Central City High School.
The Cardinals added the 2009-10 C1-4 title hardware to last year’s C1-5 District crown and will compete in the Nebraska Girls State Championship Basketball Tournament for the second consecutive season, beginning Thursday.
“Back-to-back district championships! Wow!” exclaimed Boone Central Coach Mike Kennedy following Friday’s conquest. “Now it’s time to set our sights on the first state tournament win at Boone Central!” Read more

BC Boys Fall To Scotus In Sub-District
March 2, 2010

Trey Sorell ducks and drives
The campaign closed Tuesday, Feb. 23, with a 51-39 loss to Columbus Scotus in the C1-7 Sub-District tournament - a game Boone Central coaches felt was a microcosm of the season as a whole.
“This game was like many we had all season,” Cardinal Coach Dan Zoucha lamented. “We played hard, we rebounded well, we didn’t turn the ball over much, but we just could not get shots to fall.” Read more

Let’s make this Lincoln trip a habit
Look out Lincoln - the Big Red horde is ready to descend once again!
You know, this could become a habit. At least the Boone Central Lady Cardinals and their fans would like to make it one.
Boone Central would also like to make this second consecutive state tournament trip to the Capital City last a bit longer than 2009’s one-and-done.
To date, it’s been another fascinating season for the Boone Central girls basketball program - one that perhaps turned out a bit better than predicted.
After all, the Cardinals returned just one starter from the team that made history with Boone Central’s first girls conference and district titles and initial state tournament berth. It’s no easy task for any team to replace four senior leaders.
Nevertheless, BC barely skipped a beat this season. The Cards were unable to repeat their Mid-State Conference championship, but here they are with the big prize - the C1-4 District crown and a coveted berth in the 2010 Nebraska Girls State Basketball Championships! Read more
