Card Football Players Show Appreciation With Service

August 31, 2010

bc-football-102.jpgAugust is always a hectic time for high school football players as they engage in pre-season practices and begin a new school year. At Boone Central this fall, players are busy even away from the field and classroom.
A number of Cardinals began community service work this past Saturday for local businesses that are participating in the 2010 Boone Central Football Card promotion.
Coach Arnie Johnson said this is the fourth year Boone Central has sold the discount cards, which can be used at various businesses in Albion, Petersburg, Norfolk and other areas. This fall, the coaches and team are showing their appreciation to the participating businesses with service projects. Players began by performing tasks at the Albion Pizza Hut, Subway and Fairview Lanes, and plan to include all participating local businesses in the weeks ahead.
Johnson noted that, while not mandatory for team members, any players who do one hour of this community service will receive the same credit toward their football letter as playing in one quarter of a game.

These past months seemed to drag especially slowly as Husker fans across the state and nation and around the world bided time impatiently with renewed optimism and fervor.
Coming off 2009’s stirring finish, Big Red faithful have spent a long winter and summer wondering if this is the year Nebraska truly returns to college football glory.
We’re about to find out. Read more

Are You Ready For Some Action?

Time to cue Hank Williams …
“Are you ready for some football?”
How about some volleyball … softball, girls golf and cross country?
We’re just a week-and-a-half away from a much-anticipated Nebraska football season, but more about that next week. This week, area high schools open 2010 campaigns in several sports, beginning what promises to be an entertaining nine months of athletic competition.
You’ll find our 2010 Fall Sports Preview special section(s) inserted in this issue of the Albion News, providing brief outlooks for all the schools and teams in our coverage area. It was a push to get it completed this time around, as opening games seem to creep earlier up the calendar every year.
One thing I noticed while gathering information from coaches - there is certainly a wide range of situations and expectations among our area athletic squads this fall.
From teams with many returning starters and goals of reaching playoffs and state tournaments, to groups with little experience hoping to simply mature and improve as their seasons progress.
There’s an air of anticipation for everyone before the first contests begin, but also a bit of the usual trepidation as well. Read more
