March 20, 2012

golf.jpgThe Boone Central boys golf team has plenty of experience at the coaching position, but a lack of the same on its roster heading into the 2012 spring season.

Sometimes its hard to measure a team’s success by its appearances. Intangibles seem to play a large part.
Other times, reasons a team thrived leap right off the paper when viewing statistics. It’s easy to pick out the dominance in black and white.
Such was the case for the Boone Central Lady Cardinals during their record-setting 2011-12 basketball campaign.
While, like any successful team, BC enjoyed the benefits of intangibles such as chemistry, the Cards also overwhelmed their opponents in most categories of play in compiling a 25-3 record and finishing third in Class C1 with a 2-1 mark at the Nebraska Girls State Basketball Tournament. Read more

The 2011-12 Boone Central boys basketball season might be summed up as topsy-turvy.
An 0-4 start. A Holiday Tournament championship. A three-game losing skid to begin January. Then, a strong finish, with nine victories in 13 games, including a runner-up finish in the Mid-State Conference Tournament and C1-8 sub-district title.
It all added up to a 13-11 record and the Cardinals being only a district final loss from a state tournament appearance. Read more

Boone Central accomplished that goal Thursday, edging Scotus Central 22-19 at Pershing Auditorium in the lowest-scoring game in girls state tournament history. The victory avenged an earlier 38-37 loss to the Shamrocks - one of just two the Cardinals suffered in the regular season. Read more

TIME OUT with Joe Flanagan

March 6, 2012

Sixteen minutes.
Two quarters.
The Boone Central Lady Cardinals have to feel like that’s all that stood between them and their shot at a C1 state championship.
One half. Twelve points. Countless high-quality shot attempts that bounced, lipped and rolled off the Devaney Center rim.
Agonizing.
Boone Central, with its decided size advantage, had the correct game plan in Friday’s state tournament semi-final  against Minden. The Cardinals executed it well from the outset, getting numerous shots in the lane and right at the basket. For sixteen minutes, those shots just wouldn’t fall. Read more

For three quarters Monday, the C1-4 District final between Boone Central and Mid-State Conference rival Norfolk Catholic resembled a championship prizefight, two contenders toe-to-toe, trading haymakers, with the Cardinals ahead on points (39-37).
But in the final rounds of the fourth period, Catholic landed several scoring flurries while Boone Central’s counter-punches missed the mark, allowing the Knights to pull away for a 64-50 victory, district title and berth in the 2012 Nebraska State Basketball Tournament. Read more
