St. Patrick’s Carnival set March 14

St. Michael’s Parish, Albion, will be hosting their annual St. Patrick’s Day Carnival on Sunday, March 14 at the Boone County Fairgrounds.

A dinner will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Event Center.

A quilt raffle and a silent auction will also be held. There will be games and prizes for all ages.

District Legion Convention planned here

District II American Legion and Auxiliary Convention will be held in Albion on Sunday, March 21, at the Boone County Fairgrounds Event Center.

Legion and Auxiliary members and officers from throughout the area will be attending the event, which will be hosted by Albion Post #162 and Auxiliary.

Third Planet Wind associate moving to area

Hank Thieman told the Petersburg Village Board at their March 2 meeting that Cheyenne Smith, Third Planet Wind associate, will be moving here and living in the area. Also, Midwest Energy is expected to have the contractor selected by next Thursday, and that the company will be put in touch with Petersburg. By then, they would like to have a list of housing available.

The board held a public hearing to amend the Koch Second Addition, subdivision of Koch’s lot split, and a tract of land located in the NE1/4 of Section 26, T22N, R7W of the sixth P.M. Boone County Nebraska. The public hearing remained open for one hour. This was the final hearing for both the original purchase and the second purchase. Other than a small tax issue, there appeared to be no problems. Zoning Director Barb Hanson stated, “Steve Rasmussen had signed the maps for the addition, but said taxes must be paid prior to certification.” The board enacted Ordinance #362 pertaining to the new subdivision.

New warehouse building nears completion

Dailey Feed building

Jack Dailey, owner of Dailey Feed Inc., recently finished construction on a new building for his business. Some concrete work and electrical wiring remain to be completed. This building, located on the east side of Highway 91 near the Albion city limits, will be used to store bulk commodities, including dried distillers grain and corn gluten pellets. These commodities, usually bought by the semi-truck load, will be available to smaller producers. Dailey also plans to offer a line of bag minerals through this site. He is hoping for a June 1, 2010 kick-off date.

School Board considers future technology needs

Technology needs now and in the future were discussed by the Boone Central School Board during its monthly meeting Monday night, March 8.

The Technology Committee has been meeting monthly and receiving teachers’ input. Deb Larson, high school technology coordinator, Spanish teacher Jeremy Struckman and middle school teacher Jeff Hayes were present to address the board. They requested new laptops for the middle school and a computer upgrade for the library, as well as a laptop for the school lunchroom.

The total technology budget for this year is about $116,000 for both new equipment and upgrades. Superintendent Cory Worrell said the goal is to have a consistent technology budget with a planned replacement program for technology items.

Commissioners approve changes in wind farm regs

Some setback requirements for wind energy generators were reduced and several other changes were made in Boone County’s zoning regulations governing commercial wind energy systems at the Boone County Commissioners meeting Monday, March 8.

Acting on recommendations from the County Planning Commission, the commissioners approved a reduction in the required setback distance, separating wind towers from wetland areas. The previous setback distance of 600 feet was reduced to 300 feet in the amended regulations, and the setback can be reduced to as little as 100 feet if the plan is reviewed and approved by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Army Corps of Engineers.

Other changes were made in setback distance from neighboring property lines, the definition of a “wind tower,” permitting requirements and noise regulations.

Margaret “Marge” Grace Kaiser, 88, of Spalding died Sunday, March 7, 2010 at the Friendship Villa in Spalding. Mass of Christian Burial was Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Spalding. Revs. Don Buhrman and James Murphy officiated with burial in the parish cemetery.

Geraldine “Jerry” M. Kennedy

Geraldine Maxine Kennedy, 87, of Cedar Rapids died on Friday, March 5, 2010 at Saint Francis Medical Center in Grand Island. Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 9 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids.

Mildred R. Frey

Mildred Roxana Frey, 78, of Albion died Friday, March 5, 2010 at the Boone County Health Center in Albion. Funeral services were held Monday, March 8, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Albion. Rev. Stan Schmit officiated. Burial was held in St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery.

Norma C. Woeppel

Norma C. Woeppel, 90, of Cedar Rapids died Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at Columbus Community Hospital. Funeral services were held Saturday, March 6, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids. Rev. Brian Ketelson officiated. Burial was held at Sunset Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.

Boone Central students qualify for State Speech

Boone Central’s speech team competed in the District Tournament at Pierce on Monday, March 1.

Kevin Carder and Kayla Kettelson advanced to the finals round and qualified for state meet competition.

Carder qualified for state with a second place in Humorous Prose at districts. Kayla Kettelson received third place with her Humorous Prose presentation to earn her trip to state.

The Class B State Speech Tournament will be held Thursday, March 18, at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.
