On a hot July night, when the ornery Rodeo Rose Productions bulls had the upper hand, only two competitors in the 19th Annual Gateway to the Sandhills Bullride were able to cover their bulls for the required eight seconds and earn scores.
And, in the end, Ethan Lesiak of Clarks edged Sutherland’s Trey Kerner to win the 2013 Gateway to the Sandhills champion’s belt buckle and the $2,500 prize purse the Albion FFA Alumni provided in addition to the regular Rodeo Rose event payout. Read more

Special awards were presented to Cora Larson, a member of the class of 1938, as the oldest alumnus present, and to Karl Norheden of Stockholm, Sweden, for traveling the longest distance to attend. Norheden was an an exchange student in the class of 1963.

The car show downtown featured more than 150 vehicles of various types.
Other events were a pancake breakfast, hotdog feed, golf tournament, and the alumni banquet and dance.

The 58th annual Albion/Boone Central alumni weekend begins with a pancake feed at Third and Main Streets, sponsored by the Albion Chamber of Commerce from 7 to 10 a.m. Free will donations will be accepted.
Other events are the Louis Hoppe Memorial Run, 7:30 a.m.; an 18-hole golf scramble tournament at Albion Country Club, 9 a.m.; Smoke n Chrome Car Show downtown from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; alumni banquet at 6 p.m. at Boone Central High School, and a dance at The J Sports Bar & Grill starting at 8 p.m.

Memorial Weekend will kick off a busy events schedule in the Albion area.
A new event, “Riot on the River” will be held at Mel’s Landing north of Cedar Rapids under sponsorship of the Cedar Rapids Community Club. A wide variety of music, contests and activities will include a Poker Run on the Cedar River.
On Saturday, June 1, Albion Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual Golf Shoot Out Tournament at Albion Country Club. This tournament is combined with a “Wine and Dine” event that includes a silent auction, wine and spirits tasting and silent auction.
Also on June 1, Petersburg Volunteer Fire Department will be hosting its annual Cruise Night with a poker run, “Cruising the Burg,” barbecue supper and dance with music by The Rumbles.
Newman Grove community will be celebrating its Q125 in combination with Shell Creek Valley Days, Friday through Sunday, June 7, 8 and 9, with a full schedule of events throughout the three days. Music is planned each evening, and the Grand Parade will be held Sunday, June 9, at 4 p.m.
June 15-16 will be Alumni Weekend in Albion, featuring the Smoke & Chrome Car Show, a golf tournament, sand volleyball tournament, and the Alumni Banquet and Dance.

Many Petersburg High School Alumni returned to the ‘Burg” for the annual alumni basketball and volleyball tournaments.
Winning the men’s basketball tourney was the team of Nathan Thieman, Jeremy Thieman, Nathan Zabka, Cole Henn and Jonathan Temme. Three-point shooting winners were Jimmy Feeney, champion, and Steve Bottorf, runner-up.
Top team in co-ed volleyball was made up of Jessica Zabka, Rachelle Struebing, Mandy Luettel, Jason Zabka, Nathan Zabka and Greg Luettel.

Believe it or not — it’s almost time for the 2012 Boone County Fair!
Activity at the fairgrounds begins with entry day this Thursday, July 5. The fair opens Saturday, July 7, and continues through Wednesday, July 11.
Primary fairgrounds improvement this year will be additional lighting for the race track area. The process of installing new poles and lights at the track is ongoing and likely won’t be completely finished by fair time, according to Fair Board Chairman Dave Noble.
The fair office will be open 1 to 7 p.m. starting July 5 to sell advance carnival and Fun Book passes.
Entertainment begins Saturday, July 7, with a 5 p.m. Backyard Cookoff under the grandstand, followed by a new Demolition Derby at 7 p.m. and the Maverick Band from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. in front of the grandstand.
Sunday’s events include the big Fair Parade set for Sunday at 1:30 p.m. with the theme, “Let’s Have a Party.” Adding to the fair schedule this year will be the Gateway to the Sandhills Bullride on Sunday evening, July 8, starting at 7:30 p.m. at the fairgrounds arena. This event is sponsored by the Albion FFA Alumni.
Stock car racing is the main attraction Monday evening, July 9, with street stock and limited late model classes at 7:30 p.m.
Car Soccer is New Event
On Tuesday evening, July 10, the Combine Demolition Derby, Car Soccer and Barnyard Olympics begin at 7:30 p.m. in front of the grandstand.
The final night of the fair, Wednesday evening, July 10, will feature the Two-Car Chain Race and Tuff Trucks Competition to be held at 7:30 p.m. in front of the grandstand. D.C. Lynch Carnival will be operating on the grounds throughout the fair.
