St. Edward speakers earn district medals

St. Edward’s speech team and coaches traveled to Scribner Monday for their D2-2 District Tournament, and came home with medals in three events and two state qualifiers. The OID of Kalvin Sindelar, Korina Bittner, Arlette Ireneo Gallardo, Noah Ketelsen and Lydia Ketelsen earned fifth place. Competing at the D1 State Speech Tournament on March 22 will be Kalvin Sindelar with a third place in humorous prose at districts, and Claire Tibor, who won the district championship in program oral interpretation (POI). Also competing at districts for St. Edward were Lakin Prososki, Josie Sock, Anthony Reader, Yoselin Herrera-Frias and Claire Tibor in OID; Lakin Prososki and Josie Sock in duet acting; Kalvin Sindelar and Korina Bittner in duet acting; Noah Ketelsen in humorous prose and Korina Bittner in serious prose.

Cardinal track/field teams to open 2024 at WSC indoor invite

Boone Central will get a jump on the 2024 track and field season at the Wayne State College Indoor Invite Saturday, March 16. The Cardinals will have over 30 girls and boys returning varsity athletes, along with newcomers, competing under the direction of Boone Central Coach Susan Roberts and assistants Nolan Vandenburg, Tim Rossow, Stacy Petersen, Trevor Korte and Joe Brugger in 2024.

Albion Fire & Rescue attends training

Members of Albion Fire & Rescue spent an extended weekend attending trainings in Sioux City and in Kearney, March 8-10. Nine members (above) attended the Nebraska Emergency Medical Services Association Super Conference in Kearney. Classes included Triage, Farm Trauma, Extremity Trauma, OB Emergencies, Pediatric Trauma, Emergency Planning for Medically Complex Children, Airway Management, Drowning, EMS Protocol, Cardiac Arrest, Building a Peer Support Program, Stroke Assessment, Crush Injuries, Remote Medicine, Energy Drink Effects and Geriatric Polypharmacy. Those attending the Kearney training (l.-r.) were Jessica O’Brien, Bruce Benne, Rachel Tisthammer, Kyle Larson, Whitney Paulson, Matt Childress, Jen Molt, Clay Thompson and Sheila Grape. Six members, Mitch Hardwick, Bryan Hohnholt, Andrea Krohn, Greg Krohn, David Lueken and Issac Reeder attended the Northwest Iowa Regional Fire School in Sioux City, IA, taking courses that included Introduction to Fire Fighting, New Vehicle Technology, Human Trafficking Awareness for First Responders and Training Officer education courses.

Albion FFA Alumni are gearing up for the 29th annual Gateway to the Sandhills Bullride to be held Saturday, March 16, at the Niewohner Arena on the fairgrounds. The preview begins at 6:30 p.m.

Fund drive complete for Eli Porter Project

A new inclusive playground for children of all abilities will be built in Albion’s Fuller Park, likely later this year, now that fund-raising has been completed for the project. A final donation of $30,000 from the Valero Energy Foundation last week means the total project goal of $370,999 has been met, and the project can proceed.
