Knights give scholarships to two parish graduates

St Michael’s Knights of Columbus Council #1739, located in Albion, Nebraska, regularly awards annual scholarships to local graduating high school seniors, this years awards went to Miranda McGill, and Brogan Benes, Boone Central graduates, they are shown with Anthony Kusek chairman of the scholarship committee. Awards are generally open to graduating seniors and active youth members of the parish. Academic performance, extracurricular activities, faith formation, and community service are heavily considered for the Scholarship Awards.

Name: Denny Johnson Age: 55 Family: wife, Melinda; three married daughters, seven grandchildren Occupation: Boone County Sheriff Social, Church or Civic Service: I have been a member of the Albion United Methodist Church for over forty years where I have served as a Trustee for many years. I have served on the Albion Board of Adjustment, and I am currently an active member of the Northeast Nebraska Juvenile Detention Board and a member of the Nebraska Sheriff’s Association. I have volunteered for Cops and Bobbers, Youth Mentor Hunts, school events, and several fundraising events throughout Boone County, along with coaching and officiating youth and adult sports. I created the Boone County Mobile Food Pantry for those in need. I fully support our local volunteer Fire and Rescue Departments and work with the City of Albion Police Department on a daily basis.

Boone Central benefits from Medica donation

Boone Central Elementary was the chosen recipient of the “Stretch Across Nebraska” program hosted by News Channel Nebraska and Medica this week, with announcement being made online on Monday. Communities in Nebraska have the opportunity to submit videos or photos of any healthy activity, “your morning stretch, kids on the playground, seniors in an exercise class, walking your dog, the more creative the better!” and each week, the program staff pick a winning submission to highlight, and a donation is made to a school of their choice.

Members of the locally-known Werner family have been included in this year’s Minnesota Wrestling Coaches Association’s hall of fame nomination. The family members, listed below, were inducted into the David Bartelma Wrestling Hall of Fame at a special induction dinner on Saturday, April 11.

Cardinal NUCOR project in top six

Boone Central’s industrial arts students were part of a feature by NUCOR for this year’s Ken Iverson Project in a steel-making and welding competition amongst area high schools. Fifteen schools participated in the event, with the Cardinals making the top six of the project sculptures, which will move to the 2026 Norfolk Area Home and Garden Show on March 20-22.
