Laura Donese Nelson, 71, of Newman Grove, passed away on Tuesday, May 21, 2024, at her sister’s home in Lincoln. With both sadness and gratitude, we announce the passing of Laura Nelson on May 21, 2024, after a courageous battle with esophageal cancer.

Matthew Thomas Reardon, 52, of Genoa, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, May 27, 2024, at his home near St. Edward.

Memorial services for Melba Lorraine (Wold) Larson, of Amherst, Mass., will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday June 15, 2024, at Chapel of the Incarnation, Olson Campus Center, Luther Seminary, 1501 Fulham Avenue in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Albion’s Downtown Summer Concert Series will be opening on Thursday, July 4, with special entertainment by two specialty acts at The Venue on Fourth Street. “SongBlast, Dueling Guitars” will entertain from 5 to 7 p.m.

Boone County Health Center (BCHC) this week announced the signing of Dr. Bryant Carlson, MD, as an addition to their medical team.

The 1974 graduates of Newman Grove High School celebrated 50 years at their reunion last Saturday. Class members attending included (back, l.-r.) Fina Choat of St. Edward was among more than 4,450 graduates received degrees from Iowa State University this spring. Graduate and undergraduate commencement ceremonies were held May 9-11 at Hilton Coliseum, Aims, IA.

After an hour and a half rain delay, the tractor parade that kicked off Shell Valley Days drove through the streets of Newman Grove. The tractor parade was in honor of Terry Radenslaben, Sr., a longtime resident and former schoolteacher and advisor at Newman Grove schools.

Weather observer Steve Wright reported that May 2024 rainfall in Albion set a 10-year record at 6.6 inches. This was the highest May rainfall since 2014. May rainfall has exceeded six inches one other time in that 10-year period, but the total was still less than 6.6 inches.

Shell Creek Valley Days was a success at Newman Grove last weekend despite rains that forced some schedule changes and relocations. The community received 2.5 to three inches of rain through the weekend, but it didn’t dampen spirits.
