Nebraska junior high rodeo finals held in Albion

The third annual Nebraska Junior High (5-8 grade) State Finals Rodeo was held over the weekend at the Boone County Agriculture and Education Center and Niewohner Arena. More than 90 contestants from 55 different came to the community on May 7-8 to show their talents, including: Girls events: Pole Bending, Breakaway, Goat Tying, Barrel Racing, Boys events: Chute Dogging, Breakaway, Tie Down Roping, Goat Tying, Bull/Steer Riding, Bareback Steer Riding, Saddle Bronc Steer Riding, Boys/Girls events: Team Roping, Ribbon Roping.

Mass of Christian Burial for Mary Ann Mescher, 90, of Albion, will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, May 12, 2026, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Albion, NE with Fr. Frank Baumert and Deacon Paul Weeder officiating. Immediately following the service, a luncheon will be held, after which the procession will go to St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in Petersburg, where interment will take place. Visitation will be from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Monday at the church with a 7:00 p.m. wake service.

I love election season it’s almost as exciting as an auction as I described a few columns ago. Elections have suspense, drama, invested parties - but really the part that makes me the most happy about elections is that it is a constant reminder about what makes this country great - participation.

Venue on 4th opens season

The Albion Economic Development Corporation and a host of local vendors kicked off the season in downtown Albion with a Cinco De Mayo celebration at the Venue on 4th last week. Cinco De Mayo is Spanish for ‘Fifth of May’, and is an annual worldwide celebration held on May 5 to celebrate Mexico’s victory over the Second French Empire at the Battle of Puebla in 1862, led by General Ignacio Zaragoza.

Community builders tour Leigh features on April 22

The Community of Leigh welcomed the area’s Community Builders group on April 22. Tours included Leigh Community Schools by Superintendent Cole Fischer, Leigh Acres Subdivision by Village Chairman Scott Kurpgeweit, REDSTAR by owner Kristin Mullenhoff, and C & L Acres by owner Rachel Koch.
