Barry was born to Francis Ray Waid and Lauraine Lottie Schultz Waid on Oct. 20, 1952 at the Boone County Community Hospital in Albion. On Nov. 10, 2011, he began a battle with Aspergillus Fumigatus which he lost on Feb. 1, 2024.

Barry graduated from Albion High School in 1971, UNL with a BA in 1975 and the UNL College of Law in 1978. He married Rebecca Bodmer on Dec. 20, 1980, in Gering.
