The popcorn wagon in Newman Grove history goes back to the era of World War II. Harold and Aris Johnson and family, Dennis and Linda, owned and operated the popcorn wagon, in Newman Grove, during the 1940’s to the 70’s.

Seniors fall in three

The Albion Post #162 Seniors boys’ baseball team played in three more games since last report, taking some heavy losses on the road and one at home. The team traveled to Creighton to take on the Bulldogs on June 4, falling 2-8; hosted Ord’s Post #38 Seniors on June 6, notching a loss 3-11 and then traveled to O’Neill on June 9 to take on the Irish, suffering a 13-1 loss at the final inning.

12U wins districts, set for state

The Albion 12-and-Under Attack girls’ softball team traveled to Battle Creek last weekend for the District 2/6 12C tournament, picking up a first-place finish over the full 12 team roster. With the championship win, the team will be invited to the USA Softball of Nebraska Fastpitch State Championship toward the end of June in Hastings.

Lightning strike causes fire in swamp bed

At 5:54 p.m. the Petersburg Fire Department was called to the scene of a fire June 2nd on Rob Robinson’s property at 170th Beaver Valley Road, dry lighting apparently struck a cat-tail bed in a swamp.

Boulevard cleaned up, new landscaping planned

Body
Sunday evening Ben and Ashley Thieman removed the dead and dying roses and evergreen ground covering on the east end of the Boulevard. The small plot had been land-scaped many years ago by Kelsey Claar as a Girl Scout project which included a flowering apple tree. The tree has in the past years grown larger making the area very shady. New landscaping is planned.

NRCA passed through the Burg

Sunday Highway 14 was lined with lawn chairs, vehicles and onlookers of all ages to watch the procession of vintage cars and pickups taking part in the Nebraska Rod and Custom Association car parade. Approximately 500 drivers took part in the 2025 event leaving York Sunday morning with sections being divided into 15-minute intervals between groups al-lowing for normal traffic flow.
