DHHS seeking to remove candy from SNAP benefit

The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) announced today that it is submitting a request to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to expand the state’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Healthy Choice Waiver to include candy as an ineligible purchase. Once approved, the restriction will take effect November 1, 2026.

BC Middle School wins Norfolk invite

The Boone Central Middle School Speech Team competed at the Norfolk Junior High Speech Invitational on Friday, April 24th. There were 10 schools, 193 students and 220 entries participating in this event.

4x100 relay anchors team effort at Grand Island

Traditionally, the Northwest Dave Gee Invitational in Grand Island is one of the tougher meets in which to compete in Nebraska. But, in the past few years, the meet has been ramped up several degrees to become the toughest meet in Nebraska after the State Meet.
Pictured is the Boone Central girls’ 4x100 relay team which placed 3rd at the Northwest Dave Gee Invitational Track Meet. Their time of 49.23 broke the former school record by a substantial margin. Team members are: Ciara Baker, Reagan Hooker, Addy Hedlund, and Sophie Lyon.

It almost seems impossible, but the mid-point of the year is nearly upon us, and with that it’s time for another class of our brightest to head off into the world. I have a college age daughter, and a high schooler and two under second grade, so I’m in this parenting thing for the long haul.

Club reviews Ag breakfast, Egg Hunt

Topics discussed at the April Petersburg Community Club meeting included the recent Ag breakfast. AJ and Emily Jacobson stated everything went well with 85 people served about the same as last year. The volunteers did a great job, there are a couple cans of fruit left and that are for sale.

Possible fire investigated at Courthouse...

Albion Fire and Rescue were called to a possible fire at the Boone County Courthouse on Tuesday afternoon. Firefighters joined Albion Police and the Boone County Sheriff’s office as courthouse patrons, attorneys and employees gathered on the lawn outside to wait for the final clear.
