State Speech Champions!

Boone Central’s speech team made school history by winning their first ever State Speech Championship last Thursday, March 21, in Kearney.
After a runner-up finish at the C1 State Speech Tournament last year, the Boone Central Cardinals went one better for 2024 to capture the championship over perennial powers David City (second place) and Malcolm (third).
Boone Central had 13 entries advancing to state this year, and 10 entries made the tournament finals. This group came away with three first places, two seconds, two thirds and three fourths.

Boone Central to present ‘Cinderella’ musical this weekend

Boone Central students will be presenting an updated “Cinderella” musical this Friday and Saturday, March 15-16, in the school’s Performance Gym. It still features the famed music by Richard Rogers and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein, but a 2013 book by writer Douglas Carter Beane has updated it with a few changes.

Boone Central speech wins Pierce tourney

Boone Central varsity speech team collected the sweepstakes win in their final regular season meet at Pierce last Saturday, but it was a “nail biter” according to coach Joel Sup. That makes nine team championships in nine meets this season, including the Mid-State Conference championship.

Six contestants competed in the first annual Adult Spelling Contest sponsored by the Albion Chamber of Commerce last Saturday night, March 2, at The J Sports Bar and Grill. Women emerged as the leaders as the contest rounds continued.

Area students named to UNK Health Opportunities Program

Several Boone County area students were among the 72 admitted recently to the Kearney Health Opportunities Program (KHOP) at the Universtity of Nebraska at Kearney for the fall 2024 semester. This year’s class is the program’s largest-ever, surpassing the 56 students admitted in 2023.

A big project is coming to conclusion at the DC Ag facility southeast of Albion. The new 3,600-square-foot office area is nearing completion, and owner Dallas Choat said he hopes to have that area in use by this Friday, March 8.

CRP sign-ups open through March 29

U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced that agricultural producers and private landowners began signing up for the general Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) starting March 4 and running through March 29, 2024.
