Bridge and culvert replacements are once again a priority in the Boone County one and six-year road improvement plan for 2024.

Three of the top four priority projects and five of the nine listed projects in the one-year plan involve bridge replacement.

Dan Stankoski, county highway superintendent, summarized the road and bridge improvement plans at a public hearing during the county commissioners’ meeting on Monday, Feb. 26.

He listed the projects in order of priority, and said after the hearing he hopes to get the top four priority projects completed in the next fiscal year. Total estimated cost of those four projects is $1.32 million.

Matching Funds for 2 Projects The two top priority projects have already qualified for 55 percent funding through the Nebraska Department of Roads County Bridge Match program, with plans in hand, Stankoski said.

The top priority project is C-6(419), replacement of a wood bridge on 160th Street, west of Highway 14 (southwest of Petersburg) with a triple concrete box culvert. Total estimated cost: $200,000.

Second priority is C-6(390), replacement of a wood bridge on 180th Street, east of 260th Avenue (southeast of Petersburg) with a triple concrete box culvert. Total estimated cost: $260,000.

Other One-Year Plan Projects Additional projects in the county’s one-year plan are:

• C-6(415), replacement of a culvert with a concrete box culvert on 220th Avenue, south of Old Mill Road (northwest of Albion) with an 82-foot long concrete box culvert. This project also involve a large amount of excavation and raising the road elevation, Stankoski said. Estimated cost is $560,000.

• C-6(423) is a joint project with Madison County on 340th Avenue north of 220th Street, involving milling 3.5 miles of asphalt surface road and turning it back to gravel. Estimated Boone County share of cost is $300,000.

Ralph Pieke of Newman Grove commented on this project. He said some immediate action needs to be taken due to the road condition, but he said the counties should look at replacing the hard surfaced road as a long term repair.

Commissioners said they have not heard from Madison County in a long while regarding this project, and Madison County is the lead county for these repairs. A joint meeting of the two county boards was suggested.

• C-6(414) is replacement of an existing concrete box culvert with a larger triple culvert on 220th Avenue south of 320th Street (northeast of Cedar Rapids). This project involves removing trees and building up the gravel road. Estimated cost is $250,000.

• C-6(416), replacement of a 48inch culvert pipe with a concrete box culvert on 220th Avenue north of Highway 56 (northeast of Cedar Rapids). Project also includes removal of trees and building up the road. Estimated cost is $180,000.

• C-6(421), mill existing road and replace with concrete on 170th Avenue west of Cedar Rapids. Estimated cost is $500,000.

• C-6(409), mill and resurface of 255th Avenue north from Highway 91 at Albion to 190th Street and replace with concrete, seven miles. Estimated cost is $10 million.

• C-6(413), mill and concrete resurface of 145th Street from 200th Avenue west to 170th Avenue, three miles. Estimated cost is $3 million.
