1970s Christmas classic film has Nebraska ties

Gail Rock credits an unusual collaborator that inspired a 1970s holiday season staple and launched her career as an author: a mouse. The mouse, which scurried atop the stove in a friend’s home, triggered a series of events that birthed “The House Without a Christmas Tree,” a television movie that aired each Christmas season on CBS from 1972 to 1977.

Lindsay Academy opens for students at beginning of second semester

Students of Lindsay Academy in Lindsay will start their second semester of school in the recently finished facilities. Upon receiving news in February of 2023, that the high school 7-12 grades of Lindsay Holy Family would be closed, the community was committed to maintaining an option for high school education to be offered locally.

Business expansion project underway

A major business expansion project is underway at White Star Oil in Albion. Owner Jerry Niewohner said the 1,500 square foot addition to the west side will provide additional kitchen space, meat storage and more customer seating. Completion is anticipated by spring of 2025.

Addy Donelson wins Nebraska Farmer Scholarship award

Nebraska Farmer has announced that Albion native Addy Donelson is its 2024 scholarship recipient. Donelson, a sophomore at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, is an agriculture and environmental sciences communication major, with minors in Engler Entrepreneurship and public policy.

Christmas Shoebox campaign open this week

Every year during Christmas season, Samaritan’s Purse, a global evangelical Christian ministry, provides “Christmas Shoeboxes” for needy children worldwide. Since 1993, the ministry has collected and delivered over 220 million shoeboxes, to children in over 170 countries.

Albion Cub Scouts planning sock drive

Cub Scout Pack 155 of Albion is having a sock drive. They are accepting donations that will go to the Boone County Food Pantry. The Pack is asking for community donations of new socks, hats, gloves and mittens for all ages.

Bill Schriver receives Living Veteran award

Bill Schriver, an active member of the Albion community for more than 50 years, was named the 2024 Living Veteran by local veterans’ organizations at Monday’s Veterans Day ceremony in the Boone Central Gym.
