Crane topples off roadway

Petersburg Fire Department and rescue squad was called to the scene of a crane mishap northwest of Petersburg on Tuesday, June 11, 2024 at 4:15 p.m. According to Chief Baumgartner, the crane driver apparently crowded the south edge of the of the road. Soft dirt gave way and the machine dropped down approximately a 20-foot embankment. The driver was tethered in and wearing a helmet. He was transported to the BCHC with non-life treating injuries. The department returned to the station at 5:15 p.m.

Petersburg to host Carnival Days next Tuesday, Wednesday

Petersburg Community Club will be hosting its annual Carnival Days celebration next Tuesday and Wednesday, June 25-26 in the downtown area.

This annual event features the D. C. Lunch Shows carnival starting at 6 p.m. both nights.

Additional events are:

Tuesday, June 25

• 7 p.m. - Flag Raising and National Anthem, downtown park;

• Kids Races (foot races, bicycle and tricycle races and diaper races).

• Egg Toss for teams of kids age 12 and under, with an adult.

Insurance coverage for firemen/rescue personnel

Life insurance for the firemen and rescue personnel was discussed at the June 4, 2024 Petersburg Village Board meeting

Currently coverage is at $10,000. Some towns are increasing that amount to encourage more volunteers.

Petersburg, at this point, has a waiting list for the fire department.

Due to the absence of board members Koch and Thieman, the issue was tabled

Kevin McGuire, Great Plains Communications representative, was present to discuss the proposed fiber optic internet which they will be installing.

Fair starts July 6

Bigger and better every year.

That’s become a tradition for the Boone County Fair each year, and the 2024 fair will again have a stellar lineup starting Saturday, July 6, and continuing through Wednesday, July 10.

The fair theme this year is: “Stars, Stripes and Summer Nights.”

Great entertainment will be futured each evening at the grandstand, and a new evemt. the Rough Stock Rodeo, will capture your attention on Monday night, July 8.

Grasshopper Awareness and Control in wet times

Dry conditions the past few years have reduced, natural grasshopper population controls that thrive in warm, humid weather. While recent rains may have helped slow number growth, grasshopper populations may become an issue for pasture and hay crops as the summer continues if dry weather returns.

May rainfall keeps everyone moving and mowing

May brought additional rainfall which kept residents mowing their rapidly growing lawns. By the first week of May some of the earlier planted crops were either being washed out or silted under causing a need for some to be replanted.
