Scholarship awards to 2024 Boone Central grads

Out of 54 students in the Boone Central 2024 senior class, 47 applied for local scholarships to continue their education. Of those 47, 38 of them (or 81%) received at least one local scholarship for a grand total of more than $84,000 in scholarships awarded from the local area community, according to Leanne Blanchard, high school counselor.

You’ve seen him at high school games and sporting events throughout the area over many years It may have seemed he would always be there, but there comes a time when all good things must come to an end. Joe Flanagan, sports editor of the Albion News for the past 21 years (and seven years before that) is officially retiring.

Juniors win over Plainview in opener

This past week, the Albion Post 162 Junior Legion baseball team started their summer season by hosting Plainview on Monday and traveling to St. Paul on Wednesday. Monday was a great night for baseball, and a great team effort, as the Albion Juniors squeaked away with a close 7-6 win to start the season. A gritty St. Paul team played well against Albion, as Albion fell 10-2.

Gift of sacrifice acknowledged at Petersburg Memorial Day

The annual Memorial Day ceremony was held at the Veteran’s Memorial in Petersburg. Vice Commander Pat Cleveland welcomed those in attendance. This was followed by advancement of the colors by Post 334. The pledge of Allegiance was led by Post 334 Auxiliary followed by the National Anthem sung by Emma Lordemann and Sadie Goodwater. Invocation was given by Chaplain Hank Thieman.

More than 300 bike riders from throughout Nebraska and several other states will be in Petersburg next week. Area residents are invited to help welcome the riders and attend the various events and meals planned in Petersburg Wednesday and Thursday, June 5 and 6.

Antelope Memorial Hospital announces that Anita Murphy, PA-C, has joined its medical staff. Originally from Petersburg, Murphy is a 2003 graduate of Boone Central High School.
