I wrestled (poorly) in high school, in what seems like a lifetime ago picking up at least some matches in Newman Grove’s gym - I don’t know that we traveled to Boone Central when I was younger. You didn’t miss much by not having me here! I was, historically, a Bstudent in high school, and that always seemed like it was “good enough for me” in a lot of other aspects of my life.

I love doing newspaper work. It’s a perfect blend of “stuff that’s always new” and “stuff that’s always the same.” So much of what newspapers do is ingrained into tradition - we cover the same seasons, the same sports, the same community events year after year after year, and I can almost always tell you what time of year it is by what’s going on in and around the community.

This past week saw some just outrageous behavior on both sides of the aidle. State politics jumped the rails, federal politics jumped the rails and all of us sat glued to our televisions and internet browsers to see who was right and what was going to happen.

As a man, and a husband, and a father, I can tell you that there is a distinct difference between “liking” something and “looking” at something. Men probably get my drift, wives most certainly get my drift, but for the rest of you, here’s the breakdown as I see it.

One of the first events I had the chance to attend when I first came to the community was the Boone Central Choral Clinic performance. I come from a musical family, and my kids all love music - from my college age one down to my kindergartener.

No doubt some eagleeyed Press readers will notice some slight changes in the publication this week. Unfortunately, with the new Nebraska minimum wage, printing costs and postage costs increasing, my smaller publications are going to become slightly more expensive in the near future.

I love a good survey. The chance to explain or explore a thought or a criticism or a helping hand is too much for me to bear sometimes.

This year I got a exposed to a new holiday - Festivus. It’s not really new, and it’s not really something that I didn’t know about - I just hadn’t realized people had put it into real life after watching it on Seinfeld.

I’ve warned folks for nearly two decades that there will be a relatively large black hole of information that we rely on now and really love to read in newspapers. The advent of social media was a really neat thing - it’s been really neat for 20 years, but it has been, hands down detrimental to newspapers and community.

My son’s basketball coach is new, and, I think, because of that, we actually got to spend some time together as a family over Thanksgiving. It was a great thing.
